Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes William B. Kuhl, FASLA

William Kuhl  is a highly respected landscape architect with over 50 years of experience in the field. His career evolved from his first employment with the New York State Department of Transportation, then leaving there to join M. Paul Friedberg and Associates (MPF), where he became an Associate. He left MPF to start his own firm, which he then directed for 33 years. He was approached by EDAW in 2003, at the time the world’s largest Landscape Architecture firm, to consider merging with them to facilitate the opening of a New York City office, which he agreed to do.  After EDAW was acquired by AECOM, Bill left to join Saratoga Associates in 2006. William received his undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture from both the New York State College of Environmental Science and Forestry and Syracuse University, and he attended Graduate School at New York University, where he studied Urban Planning. Bill has designed projects and provided consulting services for clients throughout the United States, where he is licensed in 13 States. In addition, he has been retained to design projects overseas, in the Caribbean, Middle East, and Europe. He has utilized his creative talent to design or help revitalize new parks, public spaces, college campus’, streetscapes and a myriad of neighborhoods and communities. Having led his own practice for over 33 years, as well as holding roles such as Vice President at EDAW ( later AECOM), William is now the Chairman of the Board and Senior Principal of at Saratoga Associates.  He is also the Managing Principal for their New York City office, and the overall Principal in Charge of the firm’s Landscape Architecture and Urban Design practice. William has received more than 90 national, state, city awards for the professional projects he has designed.

. Throughout his entire career, Bill has maintained a very active role in his professional organization, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), for more than 40 years. He served as NYC Chapter President, Chairman of the New York State Council of Landscape Architects, Chairman of the New York Chapter Awards Program,  National ASLA Trustee for the New York Chapter, and was a National ASLA Representative serving on the Landscape Architecture Foundation Board of Directors.  He is currently the National ASLA  Representative on the Board of Directors for the National ACE Mentoring Program,  whose goal is to mentor High School students and introduce them to the professions of Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Management, and he is himself a former ACE Mentor. Bill was also an Associate Professor at the City University of New York, teaching Landscape Design in their Urban Design program.  

William's leadership and mentoring skills speak for themselves, as evidenced by a number of his previous employees that have gone on to start their own firms with great success. He is also especially proud of the fact that a number of his projects received National attention, and he was presented National Landscape  Awards by the First Ladies at five different White House Ceremonies, once by First Lady Roslyn  Carter, twice by First Lady Nancy Reagan, and Twice by First Lady Hillary Clinton.
