BIOGRAPHY

Murdell W. McFarlin has a 35-year career in television as an academic and has worked with CNN, Mississippi Public TV, ABC Network, Atlanta. She has been the director of media technology at Atlanta Technical College as well as the director of public affairs. At CAU-TV, she is involved in planning programming, community affairs, acquiring clients for production. She also manages and acquires equipment for the station. She is certified in teaching online courses and acts as a regional consultant for webinar trading for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Murdell attributes the beginnings of her career to her parents. Her father was her school principal when she was younger. When her 3rd-grade class went on a field trip to WBSC in South Carolina, Murdell was in awe and became interested in the organization. Her father also installed a closed-circuit television system in his school which Murdell helped to install. The system was used for teaching classes and Murdell took the first television course offered by that school when she was in the 4th grade. Murdell's mother created educational television for South Carolina ETV and Murdell edited her mother's scripts. Her plan is to work towards a Ph.D. in Leadership and to use the credibility from that degree to become a community college president. She wants to design a model of educational leadership from the bottom down. That is, make the institution focus on the individual rather than on itself. She attributes her success to prayer, strong parents, engaged, patient mentors and being a parent. She believes in education that makes work meaningful for the development of the student. Her greatest achievement is training a significant population of African American students in television production. Murdell received the Gold Marcom award in 2013 as the producer for the documentary "From The Edge of Space and Back" which was commissioned by Morehouse College. She also was recognized as one of the "100 Most Influential African American Women in Atlanta", which is awarded by the Atlanta Business League, in October 2016.
