Dr. Patrick “Pat” Smythe is a world-renowned consultant and human resources expert. As the Executive Chairman of Emergence Growth – Human Capital Africa, he has consulted for over 1500 organizations across the local developing African markets, and on the global scale. With over 30 years of experience in HR, leadership and executive guidance, coaching and strategy, he offers a solutions based, "one stop" approach and comprehensive pan-African network. 

Emergence Growth serves as the representative and partner for Gallup, ILM and SHRM in Africa and Southern Africa, and under Pat’s leadership is comprised of an established and professional team of practitioners with diverse multi-industry experience. They offer the know-how and expertise to develop and implement effective human capital practices, as well as reward and benefits structures, people development and HR infrastructure.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of South Africa, he completed a Master of Business Administration in Human Resources Management and Services from the University of California at Berkeley. He holds dual doctorates, Cum Laude in Human Resources and Employee Engagement from California University FCE, and Cum Laude in Employee Engagement in Africa from UC Berkeley.

Pat has published numerous articles on topics of human resources, leadership and employee engagement for journals, newspapers and HR magazines globally, totaling a combined readership of over three million. He has appeared on multiple international radio shows, including BBC World Prime time and NBC. He has also reviewed numerous books on leadership and HR, and has presented at over 160 conferences around the world.

Today, he resides in the Johannesburg area of South Africa but his passion and influence on the development of business and promotion of human capital are felt and celebrated across the continent.
