Biography

Jerry has over 35+ years of experience in science and physical education. Jerry started his bachelors degree of health, recreation & physical education from the University of Carson–Newman University in 1967. Jerry then received his Master of Physical Education from The University of Memphis graduating in 1971. He then continued on to receive his Doctor of Education from the University of Georgia in 1975. Jerry's average day is 90% teaching, and 10% research. Jerry is a Professor Emeritus of physical education & exercise studies at Lander University. He is the recipient of the 1990 South Carolina Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance College/University Physical Educator of the Year Award. He was also the recipient of the 1998 Lander University Distinguished Professor Award, the 1999 South Carolina Governor's Professor of the Year Award as well as the 2005 SCAHPERD Scholar award. He is also a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Hawkins is a sought-after speaker/consultant and the author of numerous professional articles, book chapters, and other books. He is an expert witness of personal injury cases for individuals. He is also a volunteer and contributor to his Church, and local community.
