Biography

Brian combines a career profile of architecture, urban development and environmental impact management, all based on a unique blend of professional industry experience, an academic approach to research driven out of recent Masters level study; and an appreciation of how the impact of data modeling technology will affect the built environment consultancy practice in coming years. Based in the United Arab Emirates, Brian has significant experience on large multi platform projects, primarily focused on works related to RFP preparation/response, technical bid writing, design presentation, feasibility study, pre-concept and concept design development. From a total 10 year UAE experience, he has recently completed a 7 year tenure as Director of Architecture for a United Kingdom multi disciplinary practice. This role leading all design output for two design offices and a large number of construction sites within the Emirates and internationally. Driven out of a fifteen year background in large project architecture and urban development, his focus on the combination of development and the environment, is based on the belief that design solutions must consider all those socio-economic, environment and climate change dynamics applicable to the place. That place being a site, street, neighborhood or city. Principally, Brian's lead of design is strategic, client based and focused on developing skill bases held within practice office design teams and through collaborative teams. The use of technology in modeling and data is a primary driver in response to the complex nature of urban planning. During the last decade Brian has developed considerable experience in modeling technology, from BIM building information modeling, BIM in multiple platform projects, carbon footprint for development impact and lifecycle modeling for facility management. During his tenure with Stephenson Turner and Shankland Cox he was involved in the implementation of BIM technology within the work process, and development of management systems to aid practice development of both firms. Within the Shankland Cox management structure the role of Director and Board member required input to strategic planning enabling the firm to grow, when and where the market provided opportunities. The practice investigated and undertook projects in the United Arab Emirates, North Africa, Georgia, Oman and Pakistan; all endeavors viewed in the context of developing a business model reflecting multiple pillars of support within the region. In completion of a recent Master's dissertation, the subject matter was driven by a desire to understand how technology could change the management of urban development. As a result, one specific focus of Brian's career is to continue the study of this subject through Framework NDS. Brian believes the development market place demand for sustainable solutions, will blur the lines between consultancy disciplines. The future being open to effective consultancy based on a holistic approach, encompassing business and development operations, facility management; and environmental impact management in one vision. Brians principle design approach seeks to explore any opportunity to produce zero environmental burden through responsible architecture. ZEB:RA. From early 2004 I have been directly involved with implementation of BIM building information modeling within two practices, along with ISO standards 9001, 14001, 18001 for the Shankland Cox practice here in Abu Dhabi. Although Brians career has predominantly been consultancy based, his range of skills can be applied to either a consultancy practice, a contractor developer or client developer operation.
